Silver Biplanes are led by wife-and-husband team Vanessa Vass and Tim Vass. Vanessa was the singer in 90’s indie band The Melons who are probably best remembered for their two legendary live sessions on Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 1 show. Tim was bassist and lyricist in cult Creation label band Razorcuts, co-writing all of the songs on their two albums, both of which landed in the top 3 of the Indie Album Charts. Tim has also played in Red Chair Fadeaway, Dandelion Wine and the Forever People.They are joined by drummer Rob Scott, guitarist Noel Douglas and keyboard player Steve Peebles, adding a range of shimmering textures to recordings and live shows. Their first album, A Moment in the Sun, was releases in 2022 on on the Where It’s At Is Where You Are label.
Radiogram is the first single from Travelling by Candlelight, the forthcoming second album by Silver Biplanes, that will be available on Bandcamp and all other digital platforms from 2nd April.
What Tim Says: “It’s not an easy single to describe. Imagine, perhaps, a collision between The Cardigans, Hawkwind, Broadcast and The Who. Or maybe just take a listen, and decide on your own description! The song was written by me, and it started out as a tribute to an actual radiogram that my parents owned and which I liked to listen to with the lights out as a child, with the valves of the radiogram bathing the room in an orange glow. Eventually it evolved into a general celebration of retro futurism as embodied by old TVs, transistor radios, and record players, with an appropriately sci-fi musical arrangement!“
About the new album: “The new album will be up for pre-orders on 5 April. It’s a joint release on gorgeous silver vinyl between two cult indie labels: Old Bad Habits from Attica, near Athens, Greece, and wiaiwya from London, UK. Travelling by Candlelight includes eight new songs written by me covering a wide range of subjects from insomnia to transistor radios, and from memories of childhood to facing up to mortality. The album also features an esoteric group of four Silver themed songs which were recorded in late 2022 and originally intended for an EP of cover versions. As it turned out, we liked them so much that we decided to hold them back for our second album. We’re pretty confident that this is the first ever LP to feature songs written by Mike Nesmith, Hawkwind, La Dusseldorf and Hamilton Streetcar!”.
