Ginny is a young Italian multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Ginevra Fenoglio, who sings and plays keyboards and guitars on her debut EP If I’m Not Loving You, out now on Swiss label EEEE Records. Backed by a band including the EP’s producer Paolo Spaccamonti on electric guitars, Federico Marchesano on double bass and Dario Bruna on Marimba, Ginevra Fenoglio pens six alt-folk, indie folk songs with gentle acoustic textures, between guitars, string inserts and subtle synth lines. The mood on all the tracks is one of great simplicity and candour and Ginny’s vocals are lovely.
What Ginny Says: “Hi! My names Ginny. I am an italian artist from Turin raised in the United States. I have always loved song writing since I first started playing the piano at 9 years old and I’ve finally gotten to share some of my music with the world. My debut album If I’m not loving you tells stories of insecurities, heartbreak, and the innocence of young love, all accompanied by my acoustic guitar. I’m very honored to have the opportunity to share my music with you all as well as a playlist of songs by artists who continue to inspire and fuel my adoration for music.“
Her Mixtape:
Sufjan Stevens – The Only Thing
Sufjan Stevens has been an artist I have grown up listening to thanks to my dad. I have always adored the finger picking style he uses in the majority of his songs. Learning songs such as The Only Thing and Mystery of Love taught me how to finger pick the guitar which I incorporated into my writing style. When writing and arranging my songs 5 more minutes as well as Back Pocket I wanted to resemble the intensity and emotion that Sufjan portrays through using string and synth instruments in his pieces. He has, and always will, be a very big inspiration to my songwriting.
Colapesce – Oasi
This song has always been a comfort for me. As I mainly write about love, I’ve always found it hard to find new ways of explaining a feeling that’s been explained a million times before. I believe Colapesce is an artist who expresses emotions in a relatable yet unique way. I’ve picked Oasi specifically for the line “programmiamo le ferie per guardaci negli occhi” which directly translate to “planning holidays to look into each-others eyes”, one of my favorite lines ever written.
Her’s – What Once Was
I was lucky enough to work with Paolo Spaccamonti, a piemontese artist, on my EP who helped in the arrangement and production of the pieces with his electric guitar. Her’s was a two person band who used electric guitars and drums to create feel-good music by letting the instruments lead the song rather than a lyric-heavy piece. As I was first interested in music through playing the piano, I highly resonate with speaking through melodies as they can contain just as much emotion, if not more than words can.
Beach House – Take Care
Beach House songs have a dreamy and nostalgic touch that I’ve always been drawn to. Take Care is part of the album Teen Dream which I listened to on repeat when moving to college during the peak of covid in 2020. It has always acted as a safety blanket and outlet for any intense emotion I’ve felt. I highly recommend this song and album to anyone going through a period of letting go, whether it’s letting go of a place, a person, a job, or even a mindset.
Big Star – Thirteen
This is another song I grew up listening to. The song depicts a very innocent, child-like love story accompanied by two acoustic guitars. I’ve always loved the warm feeling this song encompasses and how it’s able to paint a full picture through its lyrics.
Perturbazione – Agosto
Agosto is track 2 of Perturbazione’s album In Circolo which was dedicated to me by my parents as it was released the year I was born. It was also the first concert I ever attended. I so happened to record my debut EP with the help of Marco Milanesio who also helped with the production of Perturbazione’s album Waiting to Happen. Felt like a full circle moment for me.
