Daniel McGee aka Zenxith is a 22 year old indie pop songwriter/musician from North East England. The prolific independent D.I.Y. lofi indie pop artist (in the last two years he recorded five album, a couple of compilations and various singles) makes gentle lofi indie pop with jangle melodies & very direct lead lines to accompany the multi tracked exasperated vocals, covered in tambourines. No band, no studio, all solo & done in the bedroom & recorded on a phone, Zenxith also uses a drum machine for all his songs. Despite the young age of its composer, McGee’s music seems to arrive directly from the golden age of indie music, the period from 1982 and 1987, the five years that changed indie guitar music forever.
His latest album, From The Corners Of My Cold Room was out on September 13rd and it’s self released. Check also the great double album reissue I Was Named After Daniel Treacy / Bonny’s Garden Party, which was out on Subjangle in February.
What He Says: “This was recorded in my bedroom in February 2024, the cover art is an old picture of Birmingham Snow Hill station. Backing vocals by American singer Yvonne Allen but only on the chorus, very soft blend to both our voices, rather twee. Layered with persistent tambourines & shakers, slightly mellow, this song was written in 2022 but I never used it, until now when I decided to rerecord it, so there is a demo version to this song also, but it’s unreleased. I feel this is the best song I’ve ever written!“
“This was recorded in my bedroom on June 5th 2024. This song was originally going to be titled the same as the album From The Corners Of My Cold Room. Track starts with a soft lead and bass then me saying “okay” then everything else comes in. A jerky lead guitar. Song ends with some claps that you think is the end but then it randomly comes back in to close out the song with a catchy lead line, it’s got a constant shimmering tambourine. Sort of darkish style vocals but with light & soft backing vocals by Yvonne Allen, sort of sounds like a ghostly whisper, her vocals also pan from left to right on the lyrics “From the corners of my cold room”, so this really feels like a ghostly whisper coming from each corner, it’s perfect and haunting. This is essentially the album track.”
“This is from my latest album From The Corners Of My Cold Room. It’s covered in guitars, this was recorded in my bedroom in April 2024, short verses with a longer chorus, a love song, I tend to write a lot of lovesongs.“
This was recorded in my bedroom on the 10th of May 2024 & it’s from the album ‘From The Corners Of My Cold Room’. The song starts with me spitting & then the haunting jangle lead guitar comes in that continues to play throughout the entire track, also with deep whisper like vocals. A long outro where another lead guitar comes in to blend with the other. A very dark sounding song that is covered in chorus, very dreamy. Like a dark dream! This song has an atmosphere to it, and it’s unforgettable! Dreamy backing vocals by Yvonne Allen that give a great boy girl harmony, but only on the long outro, a rather nice surprise to close the song out.
His Mixtape:
Adorable – Man In A Suitcase
Adorable are my favourite 90s band, and their 2nd album Fake is my favourite so I had to pick something from that. This song is just ace!
Television Personalities – Parities In Chelsea
Television Personalities, Dan Treacy! My biggest inspiration for starting to write songs. Possibly my favourite from the first album.
The Church – Already Yesterday
These are my favourite band! And Heyday is probably my favourite album. This is a magical and unique sound that I never get tired of listening to. I love the entire Church discography! The lyrics on this song are fantastic!
Close Lobsters – I Kiss The Flowers In Bloom
My favourite indie pop band & to be honest the band that got me into the genre as a whole. The entire Foxheads album is the greatest indie pop record of all time, in my opinion. I found these to be very unique compared to the others around at the same time.
The Clouds – Tranquil
When I first heard this, for some reason I thought it was from the 60s. Still one of my favourite indie pop tunes, just a classic!
Six Minute War – Nurses
One of the greatest post punk bands, very underrated. This, as well as Fallout, had a certain sound that I have always loved. I always go back and listen to Six Minute War & Fallout. 2 chords!
Julian Cope – Bill Drummond Said
I’ve always been fascinated by Copey, I think he’s just brilliant!
From The Corners Of My Cold Room is out now. Look HERE for more information on Zenxith.
