Sean Armstrong is a singer/recorder/player who fits into the barking grooves in the floorboards; sits on the ground, surrounded by a web of cables, and dreams that it is swept away. Armstrong recorded his first song (the song was about squirrels) at 5 years old, and could never lose a fascination with the magic of music. Sean lives in Berlin with long term musical collaborator Rachel Taylor aka Rocky Lorelei. Together they started Rehberge Records, a small tape label named after their favourite park, and play as Slipper. Armstrong’s first solo record on Rehberge, The Technical Times, was out in 2022 and a new one, Velvet Ever After will be out on cassette/online on 25th of April.
What He Says: “I recorded this one with Rocky, who helped me so much with the album. I don’t think I could have finished the album without her – I got really lost at some points. Even though I’m a bit of a loner home recordist person, I really appreciate the sound of musicians playing live together, and the beautiful unpredictability that it brings, so we recorded the rhythm guitar and the bass together live. That part was done really quickly before I had any lyrics. The lyrics just kind of took form from mumbling along, then I got the chorus, and a feeling. The feeling was the air was chewy and my mouth was dry, and I sang as quietly and as close to the mic as I possibly could. After everything else was finished Rocky said she wanted to try some electric guitar on the song, and within a couple of takes she had added her trademark reverberated whammy guitar, which really lifted it.”
Velvet Ever After will be out on April 25th, via Rehberge Records. Look HERE for more information on Sean Armstrong.
