(Make Me A) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 211: Bunnygrunt

Bunnygrunt

St Louis e’er-do-wells Bunnygrunt sprung fully formed into the Great Indie Pop Underground of the early 1990’s, when gas was cheap, 7” singles grew on trees, and every zine had a reader. After a hugely successful turn at 1994’s YoYo-A-GoGo festival and a steady stream of 45’s, the band hit the studio in early 1995 to record their full length debut Action Pants for LA scene makers No Life Records. Unfortunately, the band lineup shifted and the track list contracted between recording and release, leaving a few songs on the cutting room floor.
Now is the time to re-introduce the world to the Action Pants it needs now more than ever. Alongside the breezy perfection of Just Like Suppertime, the clattering feedback frenzy of GI2K, the jangle motorik of Open Up And Say Oblina, and the other hits you know and love, faithful Bungalos can now feast their ears on the shambling glory of Eggy Greggy, the transmission from another planet of Maude (in two parts!), and originally planned pre-release single Inanimate Objects. Meet Action Pants: The Thirtieth Anniversary Director’s Cut! A split release between Georgia’s Happy Happy Birthday To Me & St Louis’s Silly Moo, it’s just like the old one, only, like, better…
Action Pants 30th Anniversary Director’s Cut LP will be out on August 8th via HHBTM / Silly Moo Records. Early deluxe version orders come with a Bunnygrunt board game.

What They Say: “In the original timeline for Action Pants, Inanimate Objects was slated to be the “first single” released from the album. It even came out as a 45 (on March Records) with “non-album b-side” Fish Of Life. Unfortunately between the release of the single & the release of the album, Renee & her songs left the building, leaving both tracks as a standalone single. It’s nice to have Inanimate Objects back in its rightful spot!” (Matt)

Their Mixtape: “The Wheels on the Bunnygrunt tour van go round and round

MC5 – Shakin’ Street

We picked up a budget copy of the MC5’s greatest hits. They were one of those bands we’d heard of, but hadn’t really heard. This song kicked off the tape, & instantly made us fans. We even ended up covering it years later.

The Clean – Drawing To A Whole

Vehicle was probably the tape that got the absolute most plays in the Bunny Van. Just perfect pop!

Autoclave – Dr Seuss

Being good punk kids we snapped up every new Dischord related release. This one blew and continues to blow our minds.

Lazy – Jacked Up Nova

The best part of touring is making friends with people in cool bands & then you get to look forward to seeing each other every time you’re in each other’s towns. Lazy, from Cincinnati OH, were one of the first bands we just totally clicked with!

Darling Little Jackhammer – Hummingburden

Our dear St Louis friends & occasional tour mates DLJ were a lot louder than some of the pop bands we made them play with, but I think both sides benefitted from it.

Papa’s Culture – Swim

Oh, we were indie kids, but we were record store kids, too. This oddball mix of jazzy pop & lounge-y pop culture was a favorite, & never failed to confuse people riding with us.

Salem 66 – The Well

The Wailing Ultimate compilation that Homestead Records put out was another big time van play tape. The Salem 66 cut was often a favorite. I can’t believe we’re playing with Beth Kaplan in a month!

Cat’s Miaow – Aurora

We were given a couple Cat’s Miaow tapes at YoYo-A-GoGo by the illustrious David Nichols of the Cannanes & a million other cool things. He was also very easy on the eyes!

Tsunami – In A Name

Ahhhh, Tsunami opened so many doors for us & pointed us in so many right directions & pointed so many like-minded folks towards us. Their influence cannot be over-stated!

The Mountain Goats – Going To Chino

You always have to end the mixtape with a big lighter waving anthem, & The Mountain Goats deliver with Going To Chino! Enjoy, & thanks for listening!
