Dag och Natt is a band from Stockholm, Sweden, whose music strikes a delicate balance between dense and airy. Their melodies are intricately layered, often weaving together with a sense of fluidity, with vocals split between Elia Mårtensson Almegård, Sara Engström and Maja Zetterberg. The name Dag och Natt, which translates to Day and Night, was chosen with intention, reflecting the band’s desire to explore both the light and dark aspects of life through their music. Initially, the band entertained the idea of forming two separate projects – one light and one dark – with the same members. However, they soon abandoned this concept in favour of bringing everything together under the name Dag och Natt. The result is an album that embodies both joy and struggle, brightness and shadows, mirroring the interplay between day and night. The band’s creative process is both collaborative and intuitive. Writing sessions often take place in a secluded cabin in the woods, where the focus is solely on the music. The band explores themes of duality – the contrasts between love and loneliness, strength and vulnerability, connection and isolation. Their debut album, Years And Years out on August 15th via Labrador Records, reflects these themes, presenting a sonic landscape where light and darkness coexist. Rather than offering answers, Dag och Natt seeks to create space for listeners to reflect on their own experiences, embracing both the challenges and the beauty of life.
What They Say: “Iron Man could be about staying the course, step by step, keeping a steady pace. A quiet strength that moves you forward. Sometimes, just going with a vague purpose is enough. There is a calm power in simply carrying on.”
“We wrote Falling the Same Way on a quiet winters day, playing together in the dark with snow outside the windows. It’s about being both vulnerable and grateful, trusting the path ahead. Like a meditation over how life moves, and how others become part of that flow – a soft reminder that even if we live different lives, we all end up in the same place.”
Their Mixtape:
Slowdive – Star Roving
Sara: We all loved Slowdive in the 90s and are deeply influenced by their sound. This comeback from 2017 is just the perfect update of their sound. This song struck like lightning and inspired us writing the first songs of the album.
My Bloody Valentine – Never Say Goodbye
Lars: My Bloody Valentine has been very influential on my relationship with music in many ways. They have many songs that are pure pop songs but that they deliver with barbed wire as a string, which is completely unique.
The Sundays – On Earth
Maja: This was one of my favourite bands in the 90’s. The melodic light guitars and especially Harriet Wheeler’s outstanding voice influenced me a lot. I used to do my vocal warm-up to their debut album. This tune has that magic airy atmosphere that I always seek to add in music making.
Franke – Ställs Mot Dig
Elia: An album I cherish like an old, dear friend – Optimismens hån by Franke. A band from Gothenburg that gave loneliness a face and an address. A fantastic record.
Siouxsie and the Banshees – Spellbound
Lars: Siouxies and the Banshees is a band that I’ve known since I was a teenager, when I had friends and girlfriends who listened to them, but I was probably too busy listening to other bands at the time. Now I’ve started to delve into their songs and this song is probably one of my favorites. Also, a fantastic video!
Dean Blunt – 50 Cent
Elia: I feel Dean Blunt is like a David Lynch of pop music. Sometimes I don’t understand, sometimes it feels very clear. I like how he does what he wants, with any style or name. Joanne Robertson makes 50 Cent perfect with her beautiful voice and guitar, I just love her.
The War on Drugs – Pain
Sara: This tune was on the radio driving to one of our songwriting weekends in the cottage. We were blown away by the guitars and their melodies. Listening to it with the forest flashing by outside made it even stronger.
Frank Ocean – Seigfried
Maja: Frank Ocean and other contemporary artists way of making music by mixing all sorts of influences, breaking up the traditional verse-refrain-verse-set up has really inspired my approach to music making. This song, again, has that mystic, somehow dark expression that I love.
