While some artists thrive on collaboration, Few Border is proof that sometimes one person is more than enough. The French one-man band is the brainchild of Olivier Boutry (also part of Tales Of The Moon trio). Armed with jangly guitars, delicate bells, and even the occasional “fake trumpet”, Olivier crafts DIY indie pop songs that feel both intimate and expansive. There’s something charmingly homespun about Few Border’s music—crystal-clear melodies float over gently layered arrangements, giving each track the feel of a hazy postcard sent from somewhere both familiar and far away. Whether it’s the breezy melancholy of his first EP Blue Coast Weather (out in June 2024) or Copenhagen (out in July 2024) or the wistful shimmer of Bye Bye Brighton (August 2024) or Ready To Call (December 2024), every release has the air of a solo traveler capturing fleeting moments in song. The sweet and shiny Flavors & Feelings is his latest Ep, out in June, and now, with the compilation In the Twilight, out in September 2025 via Subjangle, listeners will finally be able to hold this dreamy world in their hands—a physical collection of twenty tracks collecting his four past EPs.
What Olivier Says: “Flowers Bloom is the first song of my new EP Flavors & Feeling, it’s a classic Few Border track, there are cristal guitars, up tempo, the refrain is embedded by sweet horns and bells and it’s all about flowers. When I started the project, the main thing was to keep an identity by making different songs and mood but always with same instruments, sometimes sounding jangle or dream pop but always aerial and light“
About The Album: “Weeks ago, Darrin (the boss of Subjangle’s label) asked me to release a compilation of my EPs. We are totally on the same kind of music so I thought it could be a great idea. So, there is an album to be released on September 1st with 20 titles from my four first EPs. It will give a second life to my material and give me some time to write some new songs for the next EP to come.“
HIS MIXTAPE:
The Field Mice – Coach Station Reunion
One of my main influences — I’m not a fan of the entire Sarah Records catalogue, but bands like The Field Mice, The Sea Urchins, or The Orchids were a big part of my youth and left a strong mark on my songwriting — creating something catchy with a touch of melancholy.
The Reds, Pinks and Purples – Don’t Come Home Too Soon
Beyond the fact that Glenn Donaldson is a genius — both melodically and lyrically — he’s shown that you can start a band and make that kind of music without playing live shows, releasing as many tracks as you want, at your own pace. That really encouraged me with my own EPs. I admire his consistency, his productivity, and the quality of every song he creates.
Tales Of Moon – The Meaning
Tales Of Moon is a beautiful story of friendship. In early 2024, I sent some tracks to Thierry Haliniak (My Raining Stars, Meyverlin), who suggested we involve our mutual friend Maud (Maud Anyways). The project came together, and we shared several tracks with Emmanuel (Too Good To Be True), which became the six-track EP released in May. I’m very proud to have been part of this adventure with such talented people, and to have released a record on a label I truly admire.
Wild Nothing – Summer Holidays
Few Border is often seen as a primarily English-sounding project, but part of my influences actually comes from the wave of US dream pop from the 2010s — bands like Wild Nothing, The Drums, Beach Fossils, or Castlebeat. You can hear it in the fast tempos, the reverb-drenched guitars and vocals — all elements I absolutely love.
The Pastels – Check My Heart
Alongside The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Pastels were the band I learned to play guitar with. I was immediately drawn to the simplicity of their melodies and the slightly rough, lo-fi charm of the C86 scene. I was lucky enough to meet Stephen Pastel in his record shop in Glasgow — it was a truly special moment for me.
The Beths – Metal
My favorite New Zealand band — every one of their songs is a true moment of joy. I was so happy to see them live three years ago at a festival in England.
Chime School – Taking Time to Tell You
Chime School’s first mini-album was a stunning revelation, the chiming, arpeggiated guitar interplay, drenched in chorus and jangly tones, evoked the tones of early Creation Records like Biff Bang Pow!. The vocal production, with its reverb, sits perfectly in the mix. It’s a masterclass in jangle pop craftsmanship, a definitive release for anyone serious about the genre.
Flavors & Feelings is out now, and the CD compilation, In The Twilight, will be released September 1st via Subjangle Records. Look Here for more information on Few Border.
