Following the February release of his debut mini album Home Truths via YYZ Records, Fran Carlyon returns with a song that perfectly captures his intimate, home-recorded lo-fi aesthetic. Recently featured on A Mixtape for Another Country (a compilation album accompanying Another Country, the latest record by Cindy, out on Tough Love Records) the track will be released as a remastered download this Friday, May 15th, alongside a brand new song, Nowhere. Hailing from Southend-on-Sea, Fran Carlyon crafts what he describes as “folk for ages”: quiet, unguarded songs that feel as though they drift from a late-night bedroom into the wider world. Built on delicate acoustic arrangements, subtle electronics, and a commitment to capturing the first spark of inspiration, his music offers moments of stillness that quietly linger. As Karina Gill (Cindy, Flowertown, Hospital) put it, his songs “give space for his own meaning and for us to make our own while not depriving anyone of something pretty too.”
Today we’re really proud to premiere the new single, Sometimes (they just fall out of the sky), ahead of its official release tomorrow.
What Fran Says: “I consider myself a lofi artist who attempts to capture the intimacy of a given moment in its purest state. The guitar track for Sometimes (they just fall out of the sky) was captured overlooking the sea in Maenporth, Cornwall, and if you listen closely enough you can feel those beautiful breaking waves. The kosmische keys were a one take improvisation, overdubbed a month or so later. I write to make sense of the world around me, and to help find my place within it, recording as few takes as possible to enable me to capture my emotions at their most visceral. A temporary retreat that taught a better way of being, Nowhere, the second track of the single, was inspired by walking the streets of Boston, Massachusetts, alone and completely lost in the moment.
Karina has always been supportive of my endeavours, be it blog writing, radio show stuff or my own artistic pursuits. After kindly arranging for me to play a small opening slot at The Knockout, San Francisco last year, she emailed to ask if I’d contribute Sometimes (they just fall out of the sky) to the new music mixtape she was compiling to accompany the new Cindy album Another Country. Cindy being my favourite band, I naturally said yes in a heartbeat.“
A hushed and deeply intimate piece, Sometimes (they just fall out of the sky) floats somewhere between lo-fi folk and ambient daydream. Built around delicate acoustic textures, soft electronics and an almost weightless atmosphere, there’s a quiet gravity to this short composition that moves with a kind of hesitant clarity that feel like it could dissolve at any moment. Fran Carlyon doesn’t push the song forward so much as let it unfold, allowing small details to surface and linger.

Sometimes (they just fall out of the sky) will be out tomorrow, May 15th. Look HERE for more information on Fran Carlyon.
