Nino Gvilia – The Sugar Whistle Session

Nino Gvilia

My name is Nino Gvilia, and I was born in a tiny town near the beautiful Lake Paliastomi in Georgia. I have since moved to many other places. My parents work as mushroom pickers around Europe, while I continue on my journey, always feeling the sense of wonder that accompanies my every step.” This is how Nino Gvilia, a young wandering musician from Georgia, introduced himself to the public last year. Nicole and Overwhelmed by The Unexplained, the two EPs marking Nino Gvilia’s recording debut, are highly inspired, conceptual, and dense short works in which the artist, manipulating and reworking the stylistic features of folk(lore), unfolds ten compositions full of grace that reflect on the role of the singer-songwriter and the song in a complex world and a time of crisis. Whether considered creations by Italian multi-instrumentalist and experimenter Giulia Deval or examined as works by her alter ego, Nino Gvilia, the charm of this music lies in its ability to evoke an elsewhere where words and sounds still manage to be meaningful, urgent, necessary.
Last year Nino/Giulia gave us a magnificent TRISTE© Mixtape, today we present her first live session, which previews two unmissable Italian summer concerts.

A bizarre domestic space, five musicians intent on playing sugar flutes, acoustic and electronic instruments, and singing in chorus.
Nino Gvilia and his ensemble are opening the doors for the first time to a live session of some of the tracks from the album Nicole / Overwhelmed by the Unexplained (Hive Mind Records, 2024).
After several solo concerts at Café Oto in London, Fréquence 18 in Paris, and Jazz is Dead, Nino Gvilia (the alter ego of Giulia Deval who questions the very idea of stage identity through video and performance) returns to the stage for two summer dates in Italy with the lineup that gave birth to the album: Zevi Bordovach on keyboards, synth, and harmonium, Pietro Caramelli on guitar and electronics, Giulia Pecora on violin, and Clarissa Marino on cello.
The two concerts bring together the evocative sounds of Nino Gvilia’s folk songs with evocative locations: on August 17th, the concert will be presented at Imaginaria, an animated film festival in Conversano, where the live performance will be accompanied by live painting by Egidio Marullo; and on August 22nd, at Pieve di Ponte allo Spino in Sovicille, near Siena (the event is curated by BlueRing Improvisers).
