(Make Me a) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 13: Kindsight

Kindsight (Photo by Line Hvid)

Kindsight is a new act from the Copenhagen indie scene and the first act outside of Sweden to sign with Rama Lama Records (Melby, Chez Ali,  Steve Buscemi’s Dreamy Eyes etc.). Last fall, the young quartet released their two very promising debut tracks “Who Are You” and “Terminal Daze”. Two warm, nostalgic and atmospheric indie pop songs that got them praise such as “your new favourite band”. Now, the slow-burner ‘How I Feel’ follows and expands the sound of this promising act.

Kindsight are Nina, Søren, Anders and Johannes and formed out of Nina and Sørens shared love for The Sugarcubes. According to the band, the two of them then recruited drummer Johannes to “drag him out of an unsettling obsession with jazz-music” and bass player Anders was chosen “only because of his looks and his ability to fit into small bags.”.

The quartet makes retro-tinged indie pop that is instantly appealing and addictive. Nina’s vocals crowns the atmospheric soundscape perfectly and makes Kindsight something that’s been missing in Scandinavia for a long time. they’re recording their debut album at the moment which is really exciting!

What They Say: Nina was once gripped by an overwhelming need to tell the world how she felt. Everyone agreed that it seemed like a fair deal, as she is the lead-singer. A longing ballad with a hazy view was built to heed her demand. But as it turns out, Nina hasn’t got a clue how she feels.

Their Mixtape: At the time of writing this, everyone in our band is cold, so so cold. Every practice space in Denmark has been shut down, with no opening in sight. and with an album recording coming up in a few weeks we have been forced to take drastic measures, in order to rehearse and improve our material, before the crucial recording day comes. We have set up our gear in a little shack on the outskirts of Copenhagen with no heat, little to no light and only a single coffee machine to sustain our reckless creative endeavour. Will we emerge successful?? or will the creeping cold slowly freeze us into four immovable frozen statues, forever cursed to watch over that desolate shack. Only time will tell. For now though, we are combatting the cold with this hot mixtape of music. It can’t get heat you up by getting you jumping around, or by cuddling your intestines in an intimate embrace.

Amyl And The Sniffers – I’m Not a Loser

“People look at me like i am a hooker, well i just wanna be a venue booker”.
What more do you need?. [More Aussie accents in all music please! (Don’t fear your heritage Kevin Parker)].

Drahla – Stimulus For Living

A very polite decline into modern madness. For listening exclusively when you’ve been evicted from your apartment, but don’t feel its appropriate to trouble your parents/legal guardians for shelter.

Adrianne Lenker – Two Reverse

No it might not be reinventing anything at all, but Adrianne doesn’t need any of that. She’s got your heart locked in a chest somewhere around her grandmothers country house, so you better listen!. (It doesn’t matter how many times she rhymes “Eyes” with “Lies”, its all good)

Typical Girls – Las Palmas

Is the name a The Slits reference? Their music certainly doesn’t suggest it. So i guess no, no its not.

Mary Anne’s Polar Rig – Surfaced

When i first heard the opening lines of this one, i was certain it was Kim Gordon murmuring away, turns out it wasn’t at all. Instead Mary Annes Polar Rig does what you’ve always wanted to do to your favourite Sonic Youth song, give it a pop-hook for the ages!, and thank god for that.

Okay Kaya – Psych Ward

Is Kaya okay?? I’m not so sure. For one you’d have to be more than a little out of it to come up with a line as claustrophobically plain as “I am a very patient patient”. we hope she’s okay though.

Guds Pengar – Bussen

A Norwegian pixie fairy queen is eating ice cream on a beach, and doesn’t really know why, or how she got there. Or at least that’s what we think the songs is about (??). But who needs to get lyrics when you’ve got a tune filled to the brim with so much beautiful unspoken yearning.

Collider – Daisy

Like having thrown every colour from every kaleidoscope thrown at you at once, this songs is pure ecstasy. Never fails to cheer you up when you’ve been crying all night over the death of the guitar generation.
