Cindy is a band from San Francisco built around Karina Gill (also half of Flowertown project) with Jesse Jackson on bass, Simon Phillips on drums and Aaron Diko on keyboards. Gill became a musician only recently thanks to an encounter with an abandoned Squire Stratocaster left in the basement by a previous tenant, “mummified in electrical tape with the remnants of a burrito on the head stock”, that led her to begin carefully strumming her way through simple chords and making her own songs. After one self-released LP the band made the amazing Free Advice in 2020, first a limited cassette on the great label Paisley Shirt Rrecords, then on vinyl on Tough Love (UK) and Mt St Mtn (USA).
Cindy’s third album, 1:2, will arrive in early october.
The third and final single ahead of its release on 1st Oct is Party Store (with a video directed by Kevin Linn and shot by Mike Ramos).

(Make Me a) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 36: Postcards

Postcards is a Lebanese band formed in the summer of 2012 when cousins Marwan Tohme and Pascal Semerdjian met Julia Sabra. They were joined by Rany on the bass a few months later. Their first EP Lakehouse was released in the fall of 2013, while their second EP What Lies So Still was released in early summer 2015. Here Before EP was released in the spring of 2017 and their first album I’ll be here in the morning was released in early 2018. Their sound, at first influenced by American and English pop folk, evolved in something more complex and articulate with nods to dream pop, noise rock, shoegaze and jangle pop. The Good Soldier, their second album, out in January 2020 was a great step forward for the band’s sound.
The band, now a trio, delivers their third album, the wonderful After The Fire, Before The End in October via German label T3 Records.

In 2016, San Francisco-based Sarah Gagnon formed Hectorine, naming it after her late paternal grandmother. The band has gone through a few line-up changes over the years, but Sarah is now joined by Max Shanley on guitar, Matt Carney on bass, Betsy Gran on keyboards and Laura Adkins on drums.
TEARS, the band’s second album, follows up Hectorine’s 2019 debut with sketches of 70s soft rock production, folk melodies, and deeply lyrical songs that explore love, loss, nature, and the cosmos. A low dark voice carries this ethereal, atmospheric, & art pop-inspired album.

The project is helmed by Thomas Rubenstein with the aid of some other local musicians like Glenn Donaldson, who also helped record and mix the record. It’s out on Spanish label Meritorio as well as cassette on Paisley Shirt Records.

When Andrew Romano and Alex Naidus first met in 2007, Naidus had just joined a band with his friends Kip Berman and Peggy Wang: The Pains of Being Pure At Heart.
When Naidus finally left Pains for L.A. in 2013, two hit albums and a few world tours later, he started playing with Romano to recapture the suburban-garage joy of making music for its own sake. It was “friendship incarnate,” Naidus remembers. The other members of Massage came from within the friend circle: Gabrielle Ferrer (keyboard/vocals) is Romano’s sister-in-law, Michael Felix (drums) is one of Naidus’ best friends, and David Rager (bass) is a childhood friend of Felix’s. When Felix moved to Mexico City in early 2020, Naidus’ wife, Natalie de Almeida, stepped in.
Massage first album, 2018’s Oh Boy, was a heartfelt tribute to their chosen heroes: The Feelies, the Go-Betweens, Twerps, Flying Nun. Their sophomore effort is called Still Life and is out now on Mount Saint Mountain and Bobo Integral.
