(Make Me A) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 214: The Perfect English Weather

The Perfect English Weather

The Perfect English Weather are Simon and Wendy Pickles, a duo from East Sussex taking time out from The Popguns to create a melodic web of electro acoustic pop and chamber-pop. Their first record, Isobar Blues, was out in 2016 via Matinée Records, followed, in 2018 by Don’t You Wanna Feel The Rain? (“The shocking new concept album on suburban adulthood. Love, work, travel, parenthood…” in their own words). After almost seven years they are back with a new album, again via Matinée Records. Just Beyond The Lights, preceded by a couple of wonderful singles, reflects on Wendy and Simon’s move away from the “big, bad city” of Brighton to the edge of the Sussex Cuckmere Valley; and perhaps is a small nod to their commercial appeal being just a little outside the mainstream. The album aims for a natural musical feel with acoustically recorded piano, viola, drums and guitars across most tracks. It was recorded at Church Road Studios in Hove, with contributions from talented local musicians. A new single from the album, Preston Street is out now, including a special bonus track, an alternate mix of the song “with a prominent piano melody and an extra dose of atmosphere“.

(Make Me A) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 213: Dag och Natt

Dag och Natt

Dag och Natt is a band from Stockholm, Sweden, whose music strikes a delicate balance between dense and airy. Their melodies are intricately layered, often weaving together with a sense of fluidity, with vocals split between Elia Mårtensson Almegård, Sara Engström and Maja Zetterberg. The name Dag och Natt, which translates to Day and Night, was chosen with intention, reflecting the band’s desire to explore both the light and dark aspects of life through their music. Initially, the band entertained the idea of forming two separate projects – one light and one dark – with the same members. However, they soon abandoned this concept in favour of bringing everything together under the name Dag och Natt. The result is an album that embodies both joy and struggle, brightness and shadows, mirroring the interplay between day and night. The band’s creative process is both collaborative and intuitive. Writing sessions often take place in a secluded cabin in the woods, where the focus is solely on the music. The band explores themes of duality – the contrasts between love and loneliness, strength and vulnerability, connection and isolation. Their debut album, Years And Years out on August 15th via Labrador Records, reflects these themes, presenting a sonic landscape where light and darkness coexist. Rather than offering answers, Dag och Natt seeks to create space for listeners to reflect on their own experiences, embracing both the challenges and the beauty of life.

(Make Me A) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 212: Brian

Brian

BRIAN was the name chosen by songwriter/musician Ken Sweeney who released two albums, three singles and one EP between 1989 and 1999. Brian’s first single A Million Miles was voted No 4 Single of the Year in a critics poll by Hotpress Magazine in 1989, and the band, then a duo with Niall Austin, attracted a lot of record company interest after trade magazine Music Week wrote that “every discerning A&R men should be checking out their demo“. Second single You Don’t Want A Boyfriend attracted more acclaim. Following Niall Austin’s decision to return to Dublin, Ken signed with Setanta Records and released album Understand in 1992, which contained both early singles. Live shows saw Brian attract more interest as Virgin Records issued Understand in France with follow up The Planes EP. Second Brian album Bring Trouble was recorded at Cocteau Twins studio, September Sound, and featured BBC Radio One Single of The Week, Turn Your Lights On which was nominated Irish Single of The Year 1999 with live shows supporting Robert Forster and Grant McLennan of The Go-Betweens in London and Dublin. Ken now works as an entertainment journalist in Ireland and his radio docs, R.E.M. Out Of Athens, In Search of The Blue Nile, The Go-Betweens and The Irish Writers, and The Trashcan Sinatras have won Irish and international awards.
His first radio drama, Wogan’s Sweet Sixteen, about Terry Wogan fighting to play Irish records on the BBC at the height of the IRA bombing campaign, was runner up in RTE’s PJ O’Connor Drama Awards.
His debut album Understand will be re-issued by Needle Mythology on August 29th as an expanded version called Understood to include the 1993’s Planes EP and a previously unheard track which was intended for the original album.

Sara Forslund – The Let Go

The Cords – Fabulist (single)

The Cords are a new indiepop duo from Scotland, comprising sisters Eva and Grace Tedeschi. They started playing drums when they were little kids. They found that they liked 80s and 90s indie music more than their peers did, and so formed a band, just the two of them, with Grace on drums and Eva on guitar – and the songs started to flow. With only a cassette and a flexi single (Bo’s New Haircut / Rather Not Stay) released so far (both of which sold out in a matter of hours), Eva and Grace honed their skills by playing a whole series of gigs with some of the biggest names in Scottish pop.  Their first show was with The Vaselines, and since then they have played with Camera Obscura, Belle and Sebastian, BMX Bandits and others, while also sharing stages with the new generation of indiepop stars: the Umbrellas, Chime School, Lightheaded. The Cords were invited to record a session for Riley and Coe on 6 Music on the back of their early releases, and have now recorded their eagerly-awaited debut album, which will be co-released by Skep Wax (in the UK and Europe) and Slumberland Records (in America).  Fabulist is out today and it’s the first single taken from the debut album.
Enjoy the sound of Glasgow in the summer!
