Sun June is an American indie band from Austin, Texas. The five members of Sun June spent their early years spread out across the United States, from the Hudson Valley to the outskirts of LA. Having spent their college years within the gloomy, cold winters of the North East, Laura Colwell and Stephen Salisbury found themselves in the vibrant melting-pot of inspiration that is Austin, Texas. Meeting each other while working on Terrence Malick’s ‘Song to Song’, the pair were immediately taken by the city’s bustling small clubs and honky-tonk scene, and the fact that there was always an instrument within reach, always someone to play alongside. Coming alive in this newly discovered landscape, Colwell and Salisbury formed Sun June alongside Michael Bain on lead guitar, Sarah Schultz on drums, and Justin Harris on bass. They released their first full-length album in 2018 titled Years via the magnificent Keeled Scales. The band coined the term ‘regret pop’ to describe the music they made on the ‘Years’ LP. In February 2021, the band released its second album, Somewhere, through Keeled Scales and Run for Cover. In the time since, Colwell and Salisbury have become a couple, so they’ve called this one their ‘prom’ record: a sincere, alive-in-the-moment snapshot of the heady rush of love.
In January 2022 Somewhere got a reissue with three great bonus tracks.

(Make Me a) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 56: Honeyglaze
“Born out of lead songwriter Anouska’s un-desire to be a solo-act, Honeyglaze met officially at their first ever rehearsal, just three days ahead of what was to become a near-residency at their favoured ‘The Windmill’, Brixton. Forming a mere eighteen-months ahead of a subsequent eighteen-months of mandatory solitude, Honeyglaze have since been making up for lost time, recently performing to a rammed crowd at Green Man festival, and at the iconic 100 Club for Fred Perry’s ‘All Our Tomorrow’s Festival’. Their debut single Burglar is reminiscent of Whitney’s Forever Turned Around and the stylistically-subdued existentialism of Julia Jacklin, or Haley Heynderickx. In their own words, they describe Honeyglaze as “the ungodly fusion of 3 humans into a clamouring superorganism. It eats only fish, and demands undistracted and constant worship. FFO Power Rangers, Salvador Dalí”. Their debut album Honeyglaze will be released 29th April on Speedy Wunderground.

Love, Burns is Phil Sutton. Queens resident, extracted from London, England in 2007, he is a founding member of indie pop legends Comet Gain, and has played with a number of groups over the years, including Velocette, Kicker, The Projects, Cinema Red and Blue, and The Soft City. He is currently lead singer and songwriter for Brooklyn indie-poppers Pale Lights. By day, Sutton is a librarian.
Love, Burns debut album It Should Have Been Tomorrow was recorded over a few years, in part at Gary Olson’s Marlborough Farms studio in Brooklyn, and remotely in various locations in New York City and London with the help of Kyle Forester, former member of Crystal Stilts and the Ladybug Transistor, Gary Olson, producer, the leader and voice of Ladybug Transistor, and Ben Phillipson, former Comet Gain, and Kicker.
The record is jointly released by Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten Records (Germany), Jigsaw Records (US), Austin Town Hall Records (US) and Calico Cat Records.
The album title is taken from a line in the Left Banke song Pretty Ballerina.
(Make Me a) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 54: The Saint Larsen
Last time we heard about the magnificent Danish band Northern Portrait it was in 2013 with an EP, Pretty Decent Swimmers, and a compilation album, simply called Ta!. Nine years on and rumors are that the band is finally coming back with a new album, The Swiss Army, later in the year, again on Matinée Records.
In the meanwhile here comes The Saint Larsen!
The Saint Larsen is the new musical endeavor of Northern Portrait baritone and rhythm guitarist Stefan Larsen. With a stage name inspired by his written signature, The Saint Larsen clearly bears the songwriting and musical signature of Mr. Larsen — not unlike Northern Portrait but still nothing like it. This is heritage pop music with a modern twist.
The track called Middleman is his first available song, but it is just one of several fantastic songs recorded so far and the debut album from The Saint Larsen will be released later in the year. The album might be called Show Geezer.
(Make Me a) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 53: Orange Dots
Bay Area indie pop one-man-band Orange Dots is the project of Shony, artist and multi-instrumentalist involved in many Californian bands (Redwood City’s noise outfit Anti-Core, post punk duo Cliffs & Bridges and punk band Voided Social Contract) and past member of San Francisco’s pop group Magic Bullets, a wonderful band inspired by C86, Sarah, Postcard and Cherry Red. His new project Orange Dots starts from there but add other sulkier/darker sounds in the mix. His second album, Deflated, follows last years’ debut An Episode Of Balance and the 2017’s EP You Will Cast Bells, and it’s out now on Shony’s own label Recorded Psychic Readings.
