(Make Me A) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 138: Nino Gvilia

Born in Poti, near Lake Paliastomi in Georgia, Nino Gvilia is a singer-songwriter whose lyrics range between ecology and politics, bodies and love. Her songs are influenced by folk and minimalism and make use of magnetic tapes, field recordings, vocal samples of contemporary thinkers and an array of weird instruments and vintage textures, drawing an intense dreamlike atmosphere. Nino Gvilia has just released her debut digital EP Nicole via Hive Mind Records (UK) that will be followed by Overwhelmed by the Unexplained, respectively side A and side B of a vinyl that will see the light of day on March 8th 2024. The project started getting noticed by radio stations and webzines since the BBC played the single Nicole during the Late Junction programme. But, despite this… Nino Gvilia does not exist. She is a fictional character composing, answering interviews and living in mockumentaries, invented and performed by sound artist Giulia Deval to reflect on question such as: is it still possible to convey sentimental and political content through songs? How does this need relate to the saturation of the mainstream and its mechanisms?

Stabilizzatosi in trio con l’innesto definitivo di Saverio Rosi – già presente in Tales From An Underground River – il progetto creato da Matteo Uggeri ed Enrico Coniglio torna ad offrirci un viaggio affascinante tra paesaggi sonori sempre più eterogenei, tessiture libere in cui melodia e interferenza si fondono e confondono in perfetto equilibrio.

Forse non è troppo tardi per spendere qualche parola sul secondo album di Ibisco. Che, uscito ufficialmente lo scorso 20 d’ottobre 2023 (nel medesimo giorno del fortunato Relax di Calcutta) non ha smesso di accompagnarci e “crescere” negli ultimi due mesi dell’anno appena trascorso, tanto da far venire la voglia di riannodare i fili argomentativi di quanto già scritto soltanto un anno fa a proposito dello splendido debutto Nowhere Emilia.

Pete Astor – Model Village (single premiere)

2024 marks 40 years of Pete Astor making records, a suitable anniversary point at which to take stock and double back on songs that first appeared on records by Astor-fronted combos such as Creation Records trailblazers The Loft and The Weather Prophets and Matador recording artists The Wisdom of Harry, as well as selections from solo albums that appeared on labels such as Danceteria and Static Caravan.
Astor’s motivation for Tall Stories & New Religions, his new album, which will be out on Tapete Records March 15th, 2024, is manifold: some songs are effectively re-examined in the way one might linger over a resonant picture from a box of old photographs -connecting with the essence of a younger self-, other songs are newly recast in wiser and more reflective hues, while others simply demanded exhumation from wilfully opaque, lo fi non- production.
The songs chosen are not the obvious ones – there’s no Up the Hill and Down the Slope or Almost Prayed here – but have been selected for more interesting, often esoteric, reasons.

Le firme di TRISTE©: Francesco Amoroso racconta il (suo) 2023: EP e Mini Lp

A chiusura (spero definitiva) del 2023, dopo il lungo riepilogo degli album, non poteva mancare anche un breve elenco degli EP (con non meno di tre brani) e dei mini-album (non più di sette brani in questo caso, anche se la distinzione tra mini album e album veri e propri diventa sempre più sfocata) che mi hanno colpito e appassionato. Questa categoria riserva sempre graditissime sorprese e, grazie alla brevità dei lavori, riesco a godermi anche band e musicisti che operano in ambiti che di solito frequento meno. Nel ricapitolare l’anno appena trascorso, per esempio, mi sono reso conto che ho apprezzato molto alcuni EP di post punk piuttosto “rumoroso”, mentre, in ambito di album, non è accaduta la stessa cosa: è probabile che le mie orecchie abbiano una limitata tolleranza per certi suoni.
