“Make me a mixtape/ something old and something new/ Something I said or that we did, that reminds me of you/ Make me a mixtape that makes me yours/ Make me a mixtape that brings me closer to you”
(The Promise Ring, 2000)
Inspired by the above lyrics, we asked artists we love for a short playlist of their favourite music, their sources of inspiration or, simply, the songs they like most in that moment because we think it would be a great inside look at their world and music.
First on is Marion Plouviez, a french singer songwriter whose Joni Île project has a delicate and heartwarming e.p. out just now.
What she says:
“The new record is a 6 songs ep called “I’ll be searching the light”, it is about long distance friendships and missing friends. It is in a pop folk and minimalist light like a joyous melancholy thing. It was written and recorded in the bedroom, mastered at the “Road Studio” and released with a french label called TITLE Records this october (the 30th).
Her Mixtape:
“This mixtape is quite acoustic and indie folk with artists I love and who inspired me in my every day life and through my creating process.
Some songs are from 2020. I think there has been so much beautiful releases during this hard year so I put some of my favorite ones here. Some others are older but still resonate for me and are part of who I am. 🙂 “
US Mail by Kevin Morby (2020)
Released recently, this song is so beautiful, when I heard it for the first time I cried like hell. This is this magic simplicity that reminds you how much words are powerful.
Anything by Adrianne Lenker (2020)
I went to see Adrianne with Big Thief in France back in march before the pandemic. It was wonderful !
Her new albums « songs » and « instrumentals » are simple, meaningful and poetic.
«I wanna sleep in your car while your driving » ❤
Sensory Memory by Jen Cloher / revisited by Hachiku (2020)
I love Milk! Records, this family label is very inspiring for me. The remix of Jen Cloher’s song is really cool and the clip is dreamy and indie like I love them. A good example of Milk! state of mind.
Get me away from here I’m dying by Belle and Sebastian (1996)
I completely relate to the song. This band and especially this song has been an inspiration for the acoustic atmosphere of my last ep.
Pale Blue Eyes by The Velvet Underground (1969)
The Velvet Underground rocks me during the confinement and my whole roller coaster life.
Anyone else but you by The Moldy Peaches (2001)
Impossible Germany by Wilco (2007) Jen Cloher & Tiny Ruins cover
I love Wilco, this song and this Australian cover, I’m always coming back to it.
All my happiness is gone by Purple Mountains (2019)
David is a genius, I just miss him. <3 <3
