Intervista a Filippo Strang (VDSS Studio)

E’ vero. Ci occupiamo davvero poco della scena musicale indipendente di casa nostra. Molto è dovuto a una mera questione di gusti personali, un po’ anche al fatto che non amiamo le polemiche e le gelosie che, purtroppo, spesso caratterizzano le discussioni intorno alla musica underground italica.
Per rimediare almeno in parte, però – perché siamo convinti che anche da queste parti ci sia del buono e ce ne sia tanto, se solo si gratta un po’ sotto la superficie – il nostro Tiziano Casola (accademico, musicista e appassionato di musica tout court) ha intervistato Filippo Strang, musicista, tecnico del suono e produttore, proprietario del VDSS Studio di Ceprano (l’acronimo sta per Vintage Distorted Shitty Sound), da tanti anni un punto di riferimento per chi in Italia ambisce ad un suono caldo e genuino, completamente analogico, come quello dei dischi indie rock, ‘quelli veri’.

Constant Follower – Live On The Wallace Monument

Scottish five-piece and TRISTE© favourites Constant Follower have unveiled a stunning live performance recorded in the crown of Scotland’s National (William) Wallace Monument – overlooking the band’s hometown of Stirling. They are the first band to film a session on top of the Wallace Monument. It was recorded earlier this year and directed by Martin J. Pickering. The amazing video features three tracks (The Merry Dancers On TV, Weave Of The World and I Can’t Wake You) from Constant Follower’s debut album from their magnificent debut album Neither Is, Nor Ever Was which was among Triste©’s best records of 2021 (according to Francesco, at least).

(Make Me a) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 74: Gabriel’s Dawn

Gabriel’s Dawn

Gabriel’s Dawn is a band from the Midlands (Leicester and Newcastle Under Lyme), brought together through a shared love of melodic pop, jangly guitars and classic songwriting. Featuring Gudg (vocals), Fran Feely (Bass), Leon Jones (Guitar) and Stuart Gray (keys). Their self titled debut album was recorded and mixed by band member Leon Jones at his own studio in Stoke on Trent throughout 2021. The band have all known each other socially for years. Gudg and Fran had some songs and they asked Leon if he fancied adding some guitar and soon after Stuart jumped on board and Gabriel’s Dawn were officially born in 2020. After three singles (two of which as The Gabriels), in 2021, the album was recorded throughout Lockdown with the band rarely being in the studio at the same time, however, slowly it came together. The album also features guest backing vocals from Robyn Gibson, formerly of The Junipers and currently Hot Toddy, and Phil Mason who was band mates with Leon in Alfa 9.

Johnny Hunter – Want

Sul debutto degli australiani Johnny Hunter, da chi scrive lungamente atteso e se possibile ancor più chiacchierato, non ci sarebbe poi molto da aggiungere a quanto già detto, visto che la metà esatta delle dieci canzoni in esso contenute sono già state pubblicate in questa prima metà dell’anno, principalmente nell’ep digitale Endless Days, su queste pagine assai apprezzato.

Nell’era dello streaming imperante simili prassi non sono più una gran novità. Pensiamo a come Johnny Marr e Beach House hanno ad esempio “spillolato” le loro ultime fatiche discografiche, scientemente suddivise in episodi a rilascio periodico su Spotify. A patirne è sicuramente la nostra fame d’ignoto, quel mai sopito desiderio di venire in qualche modo sorpresi o piacevolmente contraddetti dalla scoperta di ciò che non ci è ancora stato svelato.
