Idiocracy è un film demenzial-distopico, nel quale si racconta dell’anno 2505, un futuro dove, a causa della maggiore prolificità delle persone stupide, il livello di intelligenza medio degli uomini raggiunge livelli talmente bassi da mettere a rischio la sopravvivenza del pianeta e del genere umano.
Dubito che gli Yo La Tengo si siano ispirati a questo capolavoro profetico (forse solo un tantino ottimista: di questo passo il 2505 arriverà nel 2025…) o, ancor meno, alle magnifiche parole che Palo Conte scrisse per Caterina Caselli nel lontano 1970. E’ più probabile che, per trovare un titolo al loro sedicesimo album (se si contano solo quelli di materiale originale)  Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley e James McNew, abbiano dovuto semplicemente guardarsi un po’ intorno, magari limitandosi ad accendere la televisione.

(Make Me A) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 102: Alison Eales

Alison Eales

Alison is a long-standing member of the band Butcher Boy, playing piano, accordion and other keyboards as well as arranging for choir and brass. The band have made three studio albums: Profit in Your Poetry (2007), React or Die (2009) and Helping Hands (2011). All of these albums have been well-received, with React or Die featuring in The Times’ top 100 pop albums of the 2000s. The band have also released two EPs. A compilation album, You Had A Kind Face, was released on Needle Mythology in 2022, along with three new songs, with tracks mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road. Butcher Boy have supported bands including Belle and Sebastian, Scritti Politti and The Wedding Present. Eales is also a member of Glasgow Madrigirls and has collaborated with bands including The Color Waves (USA), The Just Joans (Glasgow) and Featherfin (Norway). Mox Nox is her first solo album, to be released on 24 March via Fika Recordings. Mox Nox “is an album about the passing of time – most specifically, the transition from day to night. Its twelve songs explore experiences of all-nighters, anxiety, travel, frustration, and friendship” and was produced by Paul Savage at Chem 19 studios.

Nonostante sia uno dei miei parolieri preferiti di sempre, non sono d’accordo con Glen Johnson quando afferma che la musica non possa salvarti da nulla fuorché dal silenzio. A me la musica mi ha sempre salvato da tutto (pleonasmo voluto), forse anche dai numerosi danni che la musica stessa mi ha causato.
Perciò, nonostante un caro amico abbia preso a prestito il verso per dare il nome alla propria webzine, reputo che questa considerazione sia semplicemente il tentativo da parte di un artista fin troppo sensibile di mostrarsi cinico per non risultare fragile e indifeso. Tentativo malriuscito (seppur riuscitissimo dal punto di vista della metrica e musicale) perché (al pari dell’ I Don’t Love Anyone dei Belle And Sebastian) dimostra sostanzialmente il contrario.

Complete Mountain Almanac – Complete Mountain Almanac

Sarà una questione anagrafica, ma a me la parola Almanacco fa venire in mente solo una cosa: l’Almanacco del Giorno Dopo. era un programma “preserale” (dubito che allora si usasse questo termine, comunque) che iniziava con con l’indicazione delle effemeridi del sole e della luna, cioè dell’orario in cui sarebbero sorti e tramontati il giorno successivo, seguite dal santo del giorno e dalla rubrica “Domani avvenne“, con filmati storici, dedicati a un fatto accaduto in passato nel giorno dopo.
L’Almanacco del Giorno Dopo, con la sua sigla, le sue rubriche sempre uguali e dal sapore lontano di Italia rurale e bigotta, mi facevano sentire al sicuro e ora, inevitabilmente, mi rimandano a un passato idilliaco (naturalmente solo immaginato e non vissuto, visto che stiamo parlando degli anni di piombo…).
Sento la parola Almanacco e mi sento rasserenato.

(Make Me A) TRISTE© Mixtape Episode 100: Gnac (+ Betweenness Premiere)

GNAC is a musical project by Mark Tranmer that began in 1990. The inclusion of early single The Broken Fall on Tim Burgess & Bob Stanley’s 2019 Tim Peaks compilation, was a catalyst for recent GNAC activity: Tranmer performed & recorded the album Afternoon Frost (2021) from his home studio in Stirling, Scotland, during 2020ʼs enforced solitude. There was a Tim’s Twitter Listening Party for the album, and tracks played on BBC 6 music. A new GNAC album, The Echoes On Departure, will be released on vinyl, CD, & digital on 24th March 2023, preceded by the single/video Betweenness, which is premiered here today for the first time.
GNAC have played live in Seville, Manchester, London, Glasgow & Stirling with more dates in 2023. GNAC music has been used on TV – e.g. BBC documentaries on David Hockney, & John le Carré. As well as being a member of GNAC, Mark Tranmer was also a member of The Montgolfier Brothers with the late Roger Quigley (1969-2020) R.I.P.. The Montgolfier Brothers recorded for Alan McGee’s post Creation label, Poptones, as well as for Salford-based Vespertine Records. Mark Tranmer is a member of Vetchinsky Settings with James Hackett of Glasgow band The Orchids. Tranmer also recorded an album with Italian classical piano virtuoso, Alessandra Celletti, in Rome.
