The Room – Restless Fate (album release)

After a lengthy hiatus, Liverpool post-punk / indie rock stalwarts The Room are back to release the first new music recorded in 38 years. Originally formed in 1979 by singer Dave Jackson and bassist Becky Stringer, their new album Restless Fate was recorded and mixed at Ark Studios in Liverpool and co-produced by Steve Powell (Michael Head & the Red Elastic Band, Autour De Lucie, Echo & The Bunnymen). The Album is out today on 9×9 Records. Restless Fate picks up where the band left off. At times shimmering, at times haunting, their melodic blend of progressive, alternative pop and sultry post-punk is just as relevant and captivating now as when they broke up in 1985. An exploration of man’s search for meaning and the dysfunction of the human condition, there is still a relentless optimism at the core of this record.

Parlando di Gaz Coombes mi ero un po’ (un po’ tanto…) fatto prendere la mano da fanciullesche nostalgie anni Novanta.
A distanza di qualche settimana, mentre curvo sulla tastiera m’ingegno a mettere in fila le parole della recensione triste di Hands across the creek, ovvero il brillante esordio dei sud londinesi (d’adozione) Hotel Lux, il pensiero corre verso altri anni; gli immediatamente successivi, eppure così diversi, anni Duemila.

Anna B Savage – in|Flux

Fino a qualche giorno fa non avevo mai sentito parlare di Wendy Cope. Poi una breve citazione in un brano del secondo album di Anna B Savage, che condivide il nome proprio con la poesia in esergo, mi è bastato per aprirmi un mondo.
La poesia è spesso percepita come una forma letteraria ostica e antiquata, fatta di parole difficili, metafore oscure e argomenti dolorosi e pesanti. Wendy Cope, invece, dimostra con le sue liriche dell’ordinario, con le sue frasi dirette e i suoi sentimenti semplici che, come tutte le forme d’arte, anche la poesia può essere fruibile e universale.
Non credo che la citazione di Wendy Cope da parte di Savage sia casuale perché ciò che la poetessa del Kent è riuscita a fare con la poesia, la londinese trapiantata a Dublino, Anna B Savage, riesce a fare con la musica.

Oceans are Thomas Lee (guitar, vocals), Michael Fox (lead guitar), Sam Black (rhythm guitar), Tom Mcmullin (bass), and Mitch Hicks (drums), a five piece shoegaze band based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. With inspirations varying from Joy Division and Slowdive to Boards of Canada and Tycho, the heart of Oceans’ sound is a dedication to experimentation and timbre, creating vast sonic landscapes inspired by ambient, new wave and 90’s shoegaze. Across Oceans’ breakthrough EP’s Come So Far, Live at Dangertone Studios and collaborative effort with UK’s self-titled Wilt, they’ve landed features from Beat Magazine, Backseat Mafia and Trouble Juice, and shows alongside the likes of Grazer and Allysha Joy. As stalwarts in the local scene with their sights firmly set on an international stage, Oceans return to deliver a hard-hitting and emotive ten track LP Dreamers in Dark Cities via Portland label Shelflife Records. Recorded and produced with legendary Australian producer Lindsay Gravina (Rowland S. Howard, Magic Dirt), the LP was written during the 2020 lockdown period, exploring the themes of living in isolation in a once vibrant city that now stands silent as one of the longest locked down cities in the world. The album, which combines lush synth pads with haunting melodies of the baritone guitar setting a moody soundscape for the emotive vocal harmonies, will be out on March 24th.

Come si costruisce un album indie rock? La risposta dovrebbe essere suonando come si vuole, seguendo l’istinto o qualche linea di condotta etica-estetica possibilmente strampalata, producendo il disco con mezzi di fortuna, ma soprattutto non badando a nessun giudizio altrui su come farlo correttamente.
Certo, come no!
Sarebbe bellissimo, ma la verità è che non funziona così. Suonare spontanei è già di per sé complicato, figuriamoci suonare pure “indie”.
